Dalukgala

Dalukgala is a large flat rock which joins a mountain.
The top fo the rock is about 87 metres high. On one side is a valley about 73 metres deep.
The name of the village is made up of the name of the daluk trees which grow in large number here,
and the rock (gala) which joins it.
A large number of medicinal trees and fruit trees grod here.
Poisonous snakes crawl under the bushes,
as such it is a dangerous place yet several people come here on picnic because it is a beautiful place.

The tea bush is grown widely in Sri Lanka and several other countries. Tea bushes grow best in the
Nuwaraeliya district and broduce very t sty tea. Tea is also grown in the badulla, kegalle, and ratnapuradistricts in large estates.
Some people grow small areas around their homes.
The tea bush is usually kept to a height of about 1 meter.
It grows best on land with a steep slope and well drained soil.
The tender leaves of this bush are plucked, put into bags, and sent to the tea factories. They are then made there into the teas we drink which are sold either loose or in packets.
In the village, people who have small amounts of tender leaves pour boiling water over them. When the turn a dark brown, they add a little ground ginger and make a drink.

Waterfalls.

There are several large waterfalls in Sri Lanka. They are the start of the rivers that fiow from the central hills.
The main waterfalls are called bambarakanda, ravana, bopath, diyalume, dutili, laksapana.
The largest is the bembarakanda waterfall which falls from a height of 790 ft.
These waterfalls are very beautiful to see during the rainy season.
A large number of tourists come to see them.
Many people come to bathe at these waterfalls.
It is our duty to go and see these waterfalla.

This ceremony is held in the village to ask the gods to send rain, to give rich harvest, and to give good health to all the people. To get this blessing, prayers are offered in the forn of songs to various gods such as Paththini Devi, goddess sriya, god Saman, god Katharagama. The ceremony begins at 10 p.m. and goes on till morning. It is done with deep religious belief. The ceremony starts by saying ‘Pansil’ all those present are given a special ‘roti’ to eat. It contains an extra amount of turmeric. It is called ‘Gothamba roti’. When

making it, the flour mixture is placed in strips of the plantain tree, wrapped in a plantain leaf, and baked in live coals

Martin wikrama singha, the gereatest Sri Lanka write of the last centur; was born in lsoqqala in 1890. The house in which he was born has been renovated and foms a part of the museum. The late author’s personl beloninqs and oriqional furniture have been well preserred and sare fully arranqed in the rooms.

Cloves (kararbu neti)

The clove tree grows to a height of 10-15 metres. The leaves are dark green in colour and have a slightly shiny look. Flower buds appear in clusters at the end of the branches. These are picked and dried to be used as a spice for foods. It is usually used as a finely powdered spice. Oil is also made from it.

Tamarind (siyambala)

The tamarind tree grows well in both the dry and wet zones of the country. It grows to as great height. The flowers are white or yellowish. The fruits are lightly long and bear hard seeds covered with flesh. Eaeh seed shows a slight separate appearance on the outside, covered with flesh.

Pepper is a creeper vine that is grown on trees or posts
For support.Roots arise from the thick base of the leaves and cling onto the support. The leaves are closely like the betel leaf but do not have their shinylook.

Goraka

The goraka tree grows to a height of about 20 meters. The fruits are slightly oval in shape and are made up of 6-9 pips. They are orange in colour. The pips are separated and dried in the sun when they turn black in colour. It is used to add an acid taste to food. It is a must in washing and cooking fish to remove the smell. It is always added to pickled fish as a preservative.
